How to Apply for The
Phase 1: The YouTube Pitch
Deadline: February, 28th, 2017, 12pm PST
The first thing you need to do it record a 90 second YouTube video pitching your idea. You’ll submit it here.
A team of LightHouse employees will then make sure that you’ve submitted both your application and your video pitch. Just a friendly reminder: your video cannot be longer than 90 seconds, and you must be18 years old by July 1st, 2017 to apply.
Then we will make a big bowl of popcorn and start watching all the videos! Everyone who submits a video will get their own blog page on the Holman Prize website. Don’t worry about setting that up; we’ve got you covered. All you have to do is brag about it to your friends. We’ll feature a rotating selection of our favorite and the most popular videos on the Holman Prize homepage.
By the end of March, we will have read and watched all of the applications and will be announcing, via email and on our website, the semifinalists for the Holman Prize.
A few words of advice:
Be yourself. Rehearse your pitch before recording it. Be funny. Be memorable. Be yourself. Feel free to use props, friends, sound effects, costumes. Make us laugh. Make us cry. Be yourself.
Try to record videos in landscape view (sideways) rather than portrait view. Face toward windows and light sources instead of away from them. Don’t hide your face!
Finally, we won’t publish a ton of your personal information: just your first name and where you’re from.
Phase 2: The Comprehensive Application
Every semifinalist will be asked to fill out an in-depth application detailing what they plan to do with the prize money, including a budget proposal, an itinerary, applicable references, and a more detailed explanation of your motivation for applying.
Phase 3: Interviews and Judging
If you rock your comprehensive application, we’ll contact you for a final, recorded interview. This is just a short chat where we, LightHouse, get to know you a little better.
After all that, your full Holman proposal (pitch, comprehensive application, interview) will be considered by a panel of esteemed blind people from across the world as they select the 2017 Holman Prizewinners. We will announce the Prizewinners by July 1st.
Thank you for taking the time to apply to the very first Holman Prize. We can’t wait to hear from you.
